See our posts on the most important topics in and around website design - from commissioning your own website to sustainability and accessibility, we cover the things that are important to you and to us.
Is it time to redesign your website?
Your website is a vital part in forming your online presence and connecting with your audience. There are many factors that may lead you to consider a website redesign. Read on to see if it might be time to refresh your website and to see the work we did with EMEESY Children’s Kidney Network when they decided to bring their old site up to date.
Finding your audience:
As your organisation evolves, you may find your audience changes or realise your site isn’t catering to your target audience as much as you would like. A website redesign can refocus your website, improving how visitors move through the site to find the information they need.
We help to build an enjoyable experience for your visitors by incorporating:
- Engaging features
- User-friendly design
- An intuitive menu structure
How we helped EMEESY
EMEESY’s core audience remained unchanged, but they decided it was important to define specific areas of the site, segmenting their visitors to provide the most relevant information for each group. We achieved this by creating four distinct areas of the website:
- Children
- Young people
- Parents & families
- Professionals
Each of these areas had its own distinct identity to help identify where on the site you are at any given time, as well as appealing to the relevant group and providing information in a way that is most appropriate.

Changing technology:
The digital landscape is constantly evolving, with new technology appearing rapidly. Relying on outdated software can hinder your ability to administer your website, along with impacting user experience. You may want to consider a redesign in order to improve your site’s performance, security and compatibility over many different browsers and devices, working for mobile devices, tablets and desktop.
Performance metrics from user feedback and web analytics can also help to inform you on what your audience is looking at and how they use the internet. Working alongside professional web developers is a great way to navigate your redesign to ensure your site is built for the right people.
EMEESY’s previous website was built primarily to cater to users on desktop computers, with the functionality to work on mobile added later. Their new site was built from the ground up to work with devices of all sizes including mobile and desktop, accommodating visitors at home or on-the-go.

New developments
Volute developed a new type of menu alongside the new EMEESY site with the intention to replace the previous accordion-style menu which had become outdated. The new menu is built in a way that allows visitors to click dropdown menu headings to visit that page, and also to expand the dropdown to access pages located underneath the heading.
The new menu also provided an opportunity to improve accessibility of the menu, particularly for use with screenreaders, as dropdown buttons and hidden items cause trouble for visitors who need to use accessibility tools to access the internet.
Regulation changes:
Online regulations change over time, including the well publicised introduction of the GDPR rules. With these regulations including data protection and accessibility, it’s important to make sure your site adheres to their rules, showing visitors that you value their privacy, safety and ability to use the site with ease. As public perception of these issues grows, regulations are more important to be aware of.
The Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No.2) Accessibility Regulations 2018
These regulations were introduced accross the entire Public Sector to make websites 'perceivable, operable, understandable and robust'. All members of the Volute team have a good understanding of how to make a website accessible, with experience of building accessible sites from scratch as well as bringing existing sites up to standard.
If your Public Sector website was made in 2018 or earlier, it may not meet these regulations. If you would like to talk about how we can help to build you an accessible website, send an email to
Changing your branding:
An organisation is never static; a fresh new look can bring your online presence into line with your identity to represent you to the fullest. If you’re considering a rebrand or a refresh of your visual identity, a website redesign should be a top priority. New logos and colour schemes can be incorporated into your new website to build a cohesive experience for your visitors.
As part of redesigning their website, EMEESY needed new branding to bring their site up to date. Along with a fresh new logo, it was important to update their visual identity and to introduce branding for the individual areas of of their site, each with consistent colours and motifs to help users to know where they are and to navigate their site with ease.

EMEESY’s site shows us that rebranding can help to support and guide your visitors in addition to providing website that looks clean and up to date.
