Group of people at Newcastle BRC's showcase

The National Institute of Health and Care Research (NIHR) Newcastle Biomedical Research Centre (BRC), uniquely focused on ageing and multiple long-term conditions among 20 BRCs in England, partnered with Volute to create a website that reflects their distinct identity while aligning with the NIHR brand.

The project involved replacing an outdated Content Management System with one capable of performing to modern best-practice performance.

We restructured the website’s navigation, refreshed content, and introduced flexible, reusable components to better showcase their research and impact.

Through close collaboration with their team, we delivered a tailored solution that has been very well received internally and by the wider research community. The client praised the process as smooth, supportive, and collaborative, with outcomes that exceeded expectations.

Challenge

The NIHR Newcastle BRC were in need of an updated, future-proof website which would highlight their individuality as a BRC while adhering to the brand identity of the NIHR.

They also wanted a revised menu structure and refreshed content which would better showcase their research themes, projects and impact stories.

Development

We worked very closely with Melina Dieckgrӓber at the NIHR Newcastle BRC, holding regular meetings to review progress and develop a deeper understanding of the organisation’s goals and needs.

“The regular meetings were key,” says Melina. “They helped move the project forward and allowed me to share feedback, which was always taken on board. It felt like we were working as one team.”

One specific requirement was the ability to feature important content flexibly across the website. To address this, we developed standardised, reusable components, giving the team control over how content appears and in what order, ensuring adaptability without compromising consistency.

The Results

The refreshed website has been warmly received by both the BRC team.

“It exceeds my expectations,” says Melina. “We’ve had fantastic feedback from colleagues, researchers, and our wider network. Everyone is really pleased with the result. I haven’t heard a single negative comment.”

At Volute, we pride ourselves on building strong relationships with our clients, and working closely with Melina throughout the project helped us gain real insight into the BRC’s mission, enabling us to deliver a site that truly supports their work and values.
