EMCA Cancer Nurses

There is a huge need for more specialist cancer nurses in the UK – and all of these new recruits need additional training in all aspects of cancer care provided in the most accessible and efficient way.

The number of people living with cancer nationally is set to rise to four million by 2030 and the NHS needs thousands more specialist cancer nurses to meet projected patient need. There is the potential for a huge gap in the workforce going forward – more than 3,300 by some projections.

Challenge

Where previously these clinicians will have received sporadic training and support, based on different sets of resources, our client, the East Midlands Cancer Alliance (EMCA) wished to provide a new training offer based on optimising use of modern technology.

I particularly like the usability of the system that Volute built for us and they have done an incredible job with the graphics to make the subject matter engaging.

Development

To meet this huge training need, the NHS England-funded EMCA asked us to develop a bespoke online Learning Management System (LMS).

This LMS was set up to direct participants through the course, record progress and provide a range of engaging and interactive ways to learn including quizzes and reflective pieces.

EMCA Programme Lead Rebecca Isaac said:

“There wasn't a training programme to equip people with the necessary information, so we collated knowledge that was scattered far and wide into a one-stop-shop covering all the subjects that aspirant cancer nurse specialists need to master. We have used resources from places where they are readily available, factual, verified and good quality.”

The system Volute developed for EMCA is:

  • Easy to use for learners
  • Self-managing, needing little intervention from the EMCA team
  • Set up for automated production of awards and certificates
  • Able to greatly reduce the admin burden for all involved
  • Cost-effective.

The Results

The new LMS system for EMCA went online in October 2023 and in the first few weeks alone had over 100 registrations, with more joining every week. We have been delighted with the feedback.

Rebecca says: As clinicians, everything we do is evidence based. Our new LMS allows those who want to pursue a career as a cancer clinical nurse specialist to evidence what they've learned.

“I particularly like the usability of the system that Volute built for us and they have done an incredible job with the graphics to make the subject matter engaging. It pulls everything together and we've purposely not made it linear - people can jump about subjects - because we're aware that people may have already been trained in some aspects of the course curriculum.”
